There is an island that appears on no chart, where the women live well, want for nothing, and answer to nobody but the carved idol standing quiet watch over the jungle. Then a black-sailed ship drops anchor off the beach, and a crew of pirates wades ashore to help themselves to everything on it.
They take what they want and leave laughing. The island does not laugh.
What follows begins with one woman, one offering, and one beam of light out of a clear sky. The warmth starts in her hands and does not stop, and by the time the pirates row back for a second helping, the women waiting on that beach are not the ones they left behind. Cutlasses, cannonballs, an entire crew of hardened raiders — none of it is enough, and the captain's own map gets the last word on where wise men never sail again.
